About us

A simple vision

The Hawthorndale Care Village draws inspiration from the Dutch dementia village, The Hogeweyk. However, our approach is shaped by valuable insights gained since the opening of the pioneering dementia village in 2009.

Where residents feel safe and at home

We believe the familiar rhythm of a home in a safe and welcoming community fosters a sense of freedom and security for residents, positively influencing their health, happiness and overall wellbeing.

Essentially, residents can live a normal life, exercising choice over their daily lives. By doing so, residents are found to be more active and needing less medication than those in traditional care homes.

Our pathway to a brighter future for aged care

Under the leadership of the not-for-profit Calvary Hospital Southland Foundation, The Hawthorndale Charitable Trust is a visionary organisation that is redefining a new era of senior living.

Recognising the importance of community connection, we are actively working to integrate our village with the wider community. Departing from traditional setups, residents will not be separated from society in a separate wing, but fully integrated members of the wider village.

Our vision is as follows:

  • Establish a secure and inviting village setting that mirrors everyday community life

  • Provide a normal, comforting life reminiscent of one’s formative years, fostering security and purpose

  • Break down the stigma surrounding dementia and enhancing our understanding through evidence-based approaches
